The chat forking feature allows you to branch off from any point in your conversation to explore alternative questions or approaches without losing context in the chat. This is particularly useful when you want to try a different angle on a topic or when your conversation has evolved beyond your original intent.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the specific message in your chat thread where you want to branch off of.

  2. On the top left corner of your prompt, click on Start a new chat from here

  3. After clicking, Storytell will:

    • Create a new chat thread

    • Remember all messages up to and including your selected message

    • Automatically switch you to the new chat

    • Display a Referenced indicator on the forked message

Tips and best practices

  • Strategic forking: Fork when you want to explore "what if" scenarios without affecting your main conversation

  • Maintain context: The forked chat preserves all previous messages, so the AI maintains full context of your discussion

  • Organize with titles: Rename forked chats immediately with descriptive titles for better organization

  • Original chat preservation: Your original chat remains unchanged when you create a fork

Use cases for chat forking

  • Exploring alternatives: Try different approaches to the same problem

  • A/B testing prompts: Compare how different phrasings affect AI responses

  • Branching discussions: Pursue tangential topics while keeping your main conversation focused

  • Preserving good context: Continue from a point where the conversation was productive
