Share a chat thread

Create a secret link to share an entire chat thread—or a specific answer—with anyone. Recipients get read-only access to the conversation; they cannot see your project or source documents.

Overview

Sharing a chat thread lets you send a secret link to the full conversation. When you click Share, the app shows that anyone with this link can see the full chat thread—and this page explains exactly what that means.

The link is a long URL with a special code in it. Because of that, it’s effectively unguessable and won’t turn up in search; only people you give the link to can open it. This “secret link” pattern is generally considered secure for sharing with chosen recipients. Anyone with the link can open and read the thread in a read-only view—no Storytell account or project access required.

You can share the whole thread or create a link that scrolls to and highlights a specific answer or a piece of selected text. You can also share the thread as a PDF for offline or external use.

What happens when you share

When you create a share link:

  • One link per thread — Each chat has a single active share link. Creating a new link replaces the previous one; anyone with the old link will no longer see the chat.

  • Full thread is visible — Recipients see the entire chat (all prompts and responses), not only the part you copied or highlighted. Any highlighted section is for orientation; the full conversation remains accessible by scrolling.

  • Read-only — Viewers cannot edit the chat, send new prompts, or access your project, collections, or source files. They only see the conversation output.

  • No project or document access — Shared links do not grant access to the project, Knowledge, or the source documents that powered the chat. Recipients do not see your files or collections; they only see the output—the text of the conversation (prompts and responses).

Think of the share link as a “view-only snapshot” of the chat. It’s ideal for sharing results with stakeholders, clients, or teammates who don’t need to work inside your project.

💡Tip: To see exactly what recipients see, create a share link, copy it, and open it in an incognito or private browser window. You'll get the same read-only view with no sign-in and no access to the project or documents.

⚠️ Important: Anyone with the link can see the full chat thread. Don’t share the link in public or untrusted channels if the conversation contains sensitive information. You can revoke the link at any time so it stops working.

Creating a share link

  1. Open the project that contains the chat you want to share.

  2. Open the chat thread (e.g. from your recent chats).

  3. In the chat header, click the Share button (share icon),

    • or use the Share option in the response menu (when you highlight parts of the response).

  4. In the Share Chat Thread modal, if the chat is not yet shared, click Create secret link.

  5. The link is created and automatically copied to your clipboard. The modal shows the share URL and options to copy again, share via email, or revoke.

If the chat is already shared, the modal opens with the current link and the same options.

Copying and sharing the link

After you create a share link:

  1. The Share Chat Thread modal displays the full URL in a read-only field.

  2. Click the Copy button (copy icon) next to the URL to copy it to your clipboard again.

  3. Paste the link wherever you want (email, Slack, document, etc.). Anyone who opens it will see the shared chat in read-only mode.

You’ll see a short “Link copied!” confirmation after copying.

Sharing via email

You can send the share link directly to one or more email addresses from the same modal.

  1. In the Share Chat Thread modal, after the link is created, click Share link via email.

  2. Enter one or more email addresses (up to 10 per send). Use the placeholder Enter email addresses to add recipients.

  3. Click Send. Storytell sends an email to each address with the share link and context (e.g. chat title, sender name).

  4. Check for the success message (e.g. “Email sent successfully!” or “X emails sent successfully!”). If some addresses fail, an error message lists them.

Tip: Use Share link via email when you want to notify specific people with the link in one step, without leaving Storytell to compose an email yourself.

Sharing and highlighting a specific answer

You can create a share link that opens the thread and scrolls to a specific answer, so recipients land on that part of the conversation.

  1. Open the chat and find the answer (response) you want to highlight.

  2. Open the response menu (three dots) on that answer.

  3. Click Share (or the option that opens the share modal with this answer in scope). The Share Chat Thread modal opens with a note that the page will scroll to this answer in the thread.

  4. Create the link if needed (Create secret link), then copy or send the link as usual.

When recipients open the link, the shared chat view scrolls to that answer. The full thread remains visible above and below.

Sharing with selected text highlighted

You can create a share link that highlights a specific passage of text within the chat (e.g. a sentence or paragraph in an answer).

  1. In the chat, select the text you want to highlight (click and drag).

  2. In the text selection menu that appears, choose the option to Share chat thread and highlight selected text (or equivalent share action).

  3. The Share Chat Thread modal opens; the generated link will include a fragment so that when opened, the page scrolls to and highlights that text.

  4. Create the link if needed, then copy or send it.

Recipients opening the link will see the shared thread with that passage scrolled into view and highlighted.

Revoking a share link

You can disable the share link at any time so it no longer works.

  1. Open the chat and click Share (header or response menu) to open the Share Chat Thread modal.

  2. Scroll to the Revoke link button (link-off icon) at the bottom of the modal.

  3. Click Revoke link. Confirm if prompted.

  4. The link is revoked. The modal will show that the chat is no longer shared; you can create a new link later if needed.

After revoking, anyone who opens the old link will see a “Chat Not Found” or similar message (e.g. “This shared chat may have been removed or the link is no longer valid.”).

⚠️ Important: Revoking is immediate and cannot be undone. If you share the same thread again, a new link is generated; the previous link will not work again.

What recipients see

  • Read-only conversation — All messages and responses in the thread, in order.

  • No sign-in required — They open the link in a browser; no Storytell account is needed.

  • No access to project or Knowledge — They cannot see your project, collections, files, or other chats. They only see the output of this chat—the conversation text—not the underlying documents or data that powered it.

  • Highlighting and scroll — If you shared with an answer or text highlight, the page scrolls to and (where supported) highlights that section. The part you copied or selected is highlighted; the rest of the thread is still visible by scrolling.

  • Shared chat branding — The page may show that the conversation was shared via Storytell and a link such as “Go to Storytell” or “Try Storytell” for product discovery.

Sharing the thread as a PDF

If you prefer to share a static document instead of a live link, you can export the entire thread as a PDF.

  1. Open the chat and go to the response or thread view where the full conversation is shown.

  2. At the bottom of the response, click edit this answer to open up the Document Editor

  3. In the Document Editor, click on share as PDF

  4. A PDF is generated and either downloaded or offered for sharing (e.g. via your device’s share sheet). You can then attach or send the PDF like any other file.

This is useful when you need to send the conversation to someone who should not have an active link, or for archiving and offline reading.
