Record and upload audio directly to Storytell

Storytell lets you record audio directly from the upload panel and add it to your project as an asset. This is useful for capturing meetings, interviews, voice notes, or quick thoughts without recording elsewhere first.

Overview

The Record feature allows you to use your device’s microphone to capture audio and upload it to Storytell. Once uploaded, recordings behave like any other asset; you can reference them in chats, add them to Collections, and use them in your workflows.

Recording happens inside the Storytell web app, using your browser to access your device’s microphone.

How-To

Follow these steps to record and upload audio:

  1. Open the Upload Panel

    • Click Upload in your project

    • Select Record audio

  2. Allow microphone access (if prompted)

    • Your browser may ask for permission to use your device’s microphone

    • Allow access to continue recording

  3. Start recording

    • Click Record to begin capturing audio

    • Speak using your device’s microphone

    • While recording, stay on the current screen and avoid navigating around Storytell to prevent interruptions

  4. Finish recording

    • Click on the microphone icon when you’re done

    • Review the recording if needed

  5. Upload the recording

    • Set a file name and click Upload to add the audio as an asset in Storytell

    • The recording is not uploaded automatically—you must confirm the upload

    • You can also discard a recording if you don’t want to upload it

Once uploaded, the recording appears in your project like any other file.

ℹ️ Accidentally exited the recording?
If you leave the recording screen by mistake, open the Upload panel again and select Record audio. Storytell will detect a previous recording and prompt you to recover it.

How recording works

When you use Record:

  • Storytell uses your browser to access your device’s microphone

  • Audio is captured locally during the recording session

  • Upload only happens after you finish recording and confirm the upload

  • The final audio file is stored as a project asset

ℹ️ If microphone access is blocked, recording will not start. Check your browser’s permission settings if you don’t see audio input.

Using recorded audio

After uploading, you can:

  • Reference the recording in chats and prompts

  • Add it to Collections for organization

  • Use it alongside documents, files, and other assets in your Project

🚀 Pro-Tip: Use @mentions to pull your recorded audio into conversations or workflows.

What to know

  • Microphone permission is required to record

  • Recording is currently available via the Upload panel

  • Recordings must be manually uploaded after stopping the recording
