How to copy or move files

  1. Select one or more files on the Files page (use checkboxes or selection).

  2. Click Copy or Move from the actions (three-dot menu).

  3. In the modal, choose the destination project (search or scroll the list).

  4. Optionally choose whether to copy/move labels with the files.

  5. Confirm. After success, you can go to the destination project or stay where you are.

ℹ️ Copy keeps the files in the current project and creates copies in the destination project. Move removes the files from the current project and adds them to the destination project.

Overview

Copy and move let you transfer files between projects. They do not transfer files between collections inside the same project—collections are a way to group files within one project.

  • Copy — Creates duplicates of the selected files in another project. The originals stay in the current project. Use copy when you want the same files available in two projects (e.g. a template project and a client project).

  • Move — Removes the selected files from the current project and adds them to another project. Use move when you're consolidating or reorganizing and no longer need the files in the current project.

Both actions open a modal where you pick the destination project. You can optionally bring labels along: Copy can copy labels to the new project, and Move can move labels with the files.

Copy vs move: What's the difference?

Copy

Move

Originals

Stay in the current project

Removed from the current project

Destination

New copies appear in the chosen project

Files appear only in the chosen project

Use when

You want files in two projects

You're moving files to one project only

Labels

Option to copy labels to the destination

Option to move labels with the files

You can copy the same file to multiple projects; each project gets its own copy. Move is one-way: after a move, the file no longer exists in the source project.

Step-by-step: Copy files to another project

  1. Go to the Files page (sidebar → Files tab).

  2. Select one or more files using the checkboxes on the cards.

  3. Click Copy (or open the actions menu and choose Copy).

  4. In the Copy modal:

    • Use the project list or search to find the destination project.

    • Click the project to select it.

    • If the files have labels, choose whether to copy labels to the destination project (default is usually on).

  5. Click the confirm button (e.g. Copy or Copy X files).

  6. Wait for the operation to finish. A success message confirms how many files were copied.

  7. Optionally click Go to [project] to open the destination project, or close the modal to stay in the current project.

The selected files remain in the current project; new copies exist in the destination project.

Step-by-step: Move files to another project

  1. Go to the Files page (sidebar → Files tab).

  2. Select one or more files using the checkboxes on the cards.

  3. Click Move (or open the actions menu and choose Move).

  4. In the Move modal:

    • Use the project list or search to find the destination project.

    • Click the project to select it.

    • If the files have labels, choose whether to move labels with the files (default is usually on).

  5. Click the confirm button (e.g. Move or Move X files).

  6. Wait for the operation to finish. A success message confirms the move.

  7. Optionally click Go to [project] to open the destination project. The files no longer appear in the current project.

:::important
Important: Move removes the files from the current project. You cannot undo a move from the UI. Make sure the destination project is correct before confirming.

Choosing a destination project

In both the Copy and Move modals:

  • List of projects — All projects you can copy/move assets to are shown (excluding the current project for move; for copy, the current project is typically excluded so you don’t copy into the same project).

  • Search — Type to filter projects by name (and sometimes other fields). The list updates as you type.

  • Selection — Click a project to select it as the destination. Only one destination project can be chosen per operation.

If you don’t see the project you expect, you may not have permission to create assets in that project. Check with your admin.

Copying or moving labels with files

If the selected files have labels attached:

  • Copy — You can choose to copy labels to the destination project. If a label doesn’t exist there, it may be created; if it already exists, the copied file may be linked to that label. This keeps your organization consistent across projects.

  • Move — You can choose to move labels with the files. Labels may be created in the destination project or associated there, and may be removed or unlinked from the source project depending on product behavior.

The modal shows a checkbox or option for “Copy labels” or “Move labels.” Default is usually on. Turn it off if you want only the files in the destination project, without replicating label associations.
